This call comes as the trade war between Canada and the United States escalated over the weekend, following the collapse of negotiation talks. Prime Minister Mark Carney recalled negotiators to Ottawa, leading to the implementation of 50% tariffs on billions of dollars worth of Canadian goods starting Saturday. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened further tariffs, and Canada has announced a dollar-for-dollar response. Ontario Premier Doug Ford met with steel workers to assure them that the province would spare no expense in protecting workers affected by the tariffs. He also stated that the province is broadening eligibility for its 'Protect Ontario' financing program. However, Ford offered few concrete new policy initiatives, leading opponents to argue that politicians should be back in the legislative chamber debating the best course of action. Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles criticized Ford's stance, calling for leaders to step up and protect livelihoods. She urged a strong, united response and proposed measures such as reviewing contracts with U.S. businesses, prohibiting data centers linked to U.S. companies, and prioritizing made-in-Ontario vehicles for the government fleet. Stiles characterized Trump's tariffs as belligerent attacks on Canadian workers and the economy. When questioned about the opposition's demands, Ford dismissed them as 'gutter politics,' suggesting that opposition parties should contact him directly with their suggestions. He indicated that the legislature would reconvene on its own schedule. Ontario Liberal interim leader John Fraser criticized Ford's approach, suggesting he was avoiding public policy scrutiny and debate. Fraser emphasized the historical function of the legislature and expressed concern that the premier believes it is no longer needed, opting instead to do the bare minimum.
