Oostende fishing club launches fundraiser after mass fish die-off in park pond

The fishing club De Karpervissers in Oostende has launched a crowdfunding initiative to address a significant ecological issue in the Maria Hendrikapark's Koninginnevijver pond. The campaign aims to restore the pond's fish population after a devastating die-off occurred in mid-August.

An extreme lack of oxygen, attributed to a confluence of high temperatures, prolonged drought, and critically low water levels, resulted in the death of almost all aquatic life in the pond. This environmental crisis has left the pond ecosystem severely depleted.

The club estimates the financial repercussions of this mass mortality event to be substantial, running into the thousands of euros. The funds raised through crowdfunding will be directed towards restocking the pond and potentially implementing measures to prevent future occurrences, highlighting the community's commitment to preserving local natural resources.
