Operation Against 'Hats' Crime Ring: 24 Suspects, Including Lawyers, Detained

An operation targeting the organized crime group known as 'Şapkalılar' (Hats) has resulted in the arrest of 24 suspects in Turkey, including four lawyers. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office led the investigation, which uncovered the group's alleged involvement in numerous crimes. Authorities believe the suspects threatened victims using international phone numbers to extort money. Their criminal activities reportedly include shootings, extortion, and attempted murder and injury. The arrests were made across five provinces, with Istanbul as the central focus. Among those detained are four lawyers, two of whom are women, accused of providing legal support and direction to the organization. One lawyer was apprehended at the airport attempting to flee the country. The remaining suspects are believed to have participated in shootings and threats, and provided financial and logistical support to the group, which reportedly operated with four distinct factions. The 24 suspects, including the lawyers, have been transferred to the Istanbul Palace of Justice after completing procedures at the Public Order Branch Directorate.
