Opposition questions government's decision to withdraw Primorska coin

A change to a government decree regarding the issuance of commemorative coins has sparked debate within Slovenia's opposition. The controversy centers on the withdrawal of a planned coin to mark the 80th anniversary of Primorska's reunification with the homeland.

Meira Hot, a member of the opposition Social Democrats (SD), has posed three questions to the government regarding this decision. While Hot agreed that the 100th anniversary of Jakob Aljaž's death is a worthy occasion for a coin, she argued that honoring Aljaž should not come at the expense of commemorating Primorska's annexation. She proposed issuing both coins.

Previously, in January, the former government had issued a decree specifying events for which commemorative coins would be released in 2027. This included a two-euro commemorative coin for the 100th anniversary of the birth of illustrator Ančka Gošnik Godec, and a collector's coin for the 80th anniversary of Primorska's annexation. The current government, however, amended this decree on Thursday, replacing the Primorska coin issuance.

The opposition views this move as a slight to an important historical event for the Primorska region, suggesting that the government is overlooking a significant anniversary. The debate highlights differing priorities in national commemoration and historical remembrance.
