Opwijk undertakes major road and sewer works, lasting until 2028

Opwijk is set to undergo significant infrastructure upgrades as Aquafin, Riopact, and the local government commence large-scale sewer and road works in Kalkestraat, Groenstraat, Korruit, and Diepenbroek. These extensive works, scheduled to continue until early 2028, are expected to cause considerable disruption in the area.

The core of the project involves establishing a completely separate sewage system. This will ensure that wastewater is directed to a treatment facility, while rainwater will be managed locally through buffering or infiltration. "Rainwater often ends up in the sewer system today," explained Alderman of Public Works Jan Couck. "During heavy rainfall, this can overload the system and increase the risk of flooding."

Beyond the underground infrastructure, the neighborhood's appearance will also be transformed. Parking spaces will utilize grass pavers, and driveways and footpaths will feature water-permeable surfaces. A section of Kalkestraat will be redesigned as a residential area, complete with seating, enhanced green spaces, and a partially uncovered section of the Kluisbeek stream.

To minimize inconvenience, the construction will proceed in phases across different zones. This approach ensures that homes remain accessible on foot throughout the project. Residents will receive active updates regarding the schedule, accessibility, waste collection, and any necessary diversions. This initiative is part of a larger plan for Opwijk, with further major sewer works slated for Wallekesweg, Hulst, Broekstraat, and Waaienberg-Mansteen in the coming years.
