ORF Must Seek Higher Fee to Challenge Funding Cut, Experts Say

Broadcasting law experts argue that the Austrian public broadcaster ORF must formally apply for an increased broadcasting fee to legally challenge the recent 93 million euro cut to its federal subsidies. This cut, implemented by the government, is seen as a significant financial blow to the organization.

The legal pathway suggests that only by seeking a higher fee can ORF establish the necessary grounds to contest what some consider a "EU- and constitutionally questionable" reduction in funding. The ORF Foundation Board, the broadcaster's highest governing body, is slated to address the situation on August 11. This meeting will also involve the appointment of other directors.

Independent foundation board member Leonhard Dobusch has stated that Director General Ingrid Thurnher is obligated to initiate the process for a fee increase. This move is deemed essential for ORF to legally pursue its case against the subsidy cut. The situation highlights the ongoing tension between the government's financial decisions and the operational independence of the public broadcaster.
