Osun calls for reconciliation, warns against post-election violence

The Osun State Government has issued a stern warning against disrupting public peace, urging political actors and residents to embrace reconciliation following the recent governorship election. The government also called on security agencies to ensure the restoration of law and order amid reports of potential fresh crises in some parts of the state.

The government also noted the immediate post- election disruptions in some areas of the state and urged all residents and citizens of the state to allow restoration of peaceful co- existence and rule based interactions among all sectors of the society.

In a statement, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, expressed condolences to victims of pre-election violence and stressed the need for healing in the post-election period. The government is particularly disturbed by reports of plans by some stakeholders to ignite new rounds of crisis across local government councils and motor parks, stating that such actions should cease immediately as the state requires peace for development, not political violence.

The government emphasized that the election has been decided and that any push towards violence would be an affront to the Presidency and the Nigerian Constitution. It urged security agencies to enforce the rule of law, release political detainees, and end perceived partisan policing. Political actors were also called upon to act peacefully, focusing on healing and development, and avoiding a relapse into the pre-election era of violence. Governor Ademola Adeleke had previously commended the APC candidate for calling for peace, advocating for leaders to join hands in moving the state forward.
