Osun Election: PDP Calls Adeleke's Victory 'Advance Payment' Against APC, Eyes 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared the victory of Governor Ademola Adeleke in the Osun State governorship election as an 'advance payment' from Nigerians to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling that the final settlement will occur in the 2027 general elections. The party views the Osun outcome as a crucial warning that citizens can still resist political pressure and safeguard their votes, underscoring the escalating importance of electoral integrity as 2027 approaches.

Overall, the result from Osun is an advance payment by Nigerians against the APC, the balance will come in 2027.

In separate statements, PDP officials highlighted the broader political implications of the election. Comrade Ini Ememobong, the Interim National Working Committee's interim chairman, alleged that the APC deployed extensive resources and machinery, including tactics of intimidation, assaults, and arrests targeting opposition figures, in a bid to secure victory. Ememobong specifically referenced the controversial questioning of Senator Francis Fadahunsi by the police as an example of the pressure faced by opposition leaders during the polls.

The ruling party that is ruining the country mobilized their entire rigging machinery to Osun, with nothing left to chance, boasting that they will repeat the Edo experience.

Ememobong further accused the APC of mobilizing their "rigging machinery" in Osun, aiming to replicate past electoral successes. However, he asserted that the people of Osun successfully resisted these alleged machinations, ensuring the triumph of the ballot. The PDP also voiced strong criticism against security agencies, particularly the police, for perceived partiality. Additionally, they condemned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for freezing the state government's accounts and pointed to a significant delay by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in uploading results from numerous polling units.

The manifest partiality of security agencies, especially the police, and even the shameful intervention by the EFCC freezing the accounts of the state; and the intentional delay (more than two hours) in uploading the results of the 470 polling units by INEC, are acts that are not just condemnable but are actions capable of derailing democracy.

Looking ahead, Ememobong cautioned Nigerians against complacency, stressing that the APC's defeat in Osun does not signify an end to alleged attempts to undermine the electoral process. He urged citizens to actively participate by voting, protecting, and defending their ballots. The PDP's stance emphasizes that electoral victories must genuinely reflect the voters' will, rather than being dictated by political power or state institutions.
