Osun governor orders panel into Ikire killings

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has issued an Executive Order to establish a Coroner Inquest/Panel of Inquiry following recent killings, shootings, and violence at Naira and Kobo Junction in Ikire. The incident occurred on August 24, 2026, at the Motor Park/Garage Area within the Irewole Local Government Area.

The panel is mandated to determine the circumstances leading to the shootings and killings, examine the role of security operatives, establish whether live ammunition or other weapons were used and whether their use complied with the law, rules of engagement and human rights standards.

The panel, led by Magistrate Ayokunle Shiyanbola, is tasked with a comprehensive investigation. Its mandate includes determining the circumstances surrounding the violence, identifying the victims, establishing both immediate and remote causes, and examining any potential criminal responsibility linked to the deaths. The inquiry will also scrutinize the actions of security operatives, specifically whether live ammunition was used and if its deployment complied with legal standards, rules of engagement, and human rights.

Furthermore, the panel is empowered to identify any individual, group, security personnel, political actor, or public official whose actions or omissions may have contributed to the incident. The government stated that the inquiry could recommend prosecution, disciplinary measures, compensation for victims, and institutional reforms aimed at preventing similar events in the future.

Governor Adeleke has also directed the preservation of all relevant evidence, including firearms, ammunition records, communication logs, and medical or forensic reports. The Executive Order ensures witness protection and mandates the government to obtain necessary documentation while maintaining peace in Ikire pending the conclusion of the investigation.
