Osun poll: Lawyer seeks UK sanctions against senator over incitement

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has formally requested the British government to implement a visa ban on Senator Francis Fadahunsi and his family. The plea, directed to the British High Commissioner in Abuja, cites alleged incitement against members of the Accord Party in the lead-up to the Osun State governorship election.

Adeyanju's letter, dated August 11, 2026, and received by the High Commission the following day, references a video where Senator Fadahunsi, a member of the All Progressives Congress, reportedly addressed supporters in Yoruba. According to translations published by media platforms, Fadahunsi allegedly stated, “From now on till the election day, whenever you see them (Accord Party members), kill them.” Copies of these publications and a flash drive containing the video were submitted as evidence.

The lawyer argued that such actions by Nigerian politicians often lead to impunity, undermining democratic will, the rule of law, and causing significant loss of life and property. Adeyanju urged the UK to consider stronger measures, including potential asset seizures and foreclosure of business interests, against individuals who undermine Nigeria's constitutional democratic process.

For far too long, Nigerian politicians have acted with impunity in a manner that has subverted the will of the Nigerian people, undermined the rule of law, and caused substantial loss of lives and property of ordinary Nigerians.

Senator Fadahunsi, representing the Osun East Senatorial District, has been summoned by the Osun State Police Command regarding the alleged comments. While he reportedly honored the summons and has since been released, details of his interrogation remain undisclosed.
