Out-of-Control Fires Rage in Antioquia, Colombia; Helicopters and Evacuations Deployed

Antioquia, Colombia, is facing a severe wave of forest fires, prompting an intense aerial and ground offensive by emergency response agencies. Municipalities including Abejorral, Bello, and Medellín are grappling with conflagrations that have been intensified by adverse atmospheric conditions. Rising temperatures, low vegetation humidity, and the effects of the El Niño phenomenon have created a tinderbox environment, accelerating the spread of fires.

In Abejorral, firefighting efforts are particularly challenging due to the difficult terrain. A helicopter equipped with a Bambi Bucket system, along with personnel from the National Army, Civil Defense, and local fire departments, are conducting water drops and suppression maneuvers. As a precautionary measure against the advancing flames, authorities have ordered the preventive evacuation of 30 homes.

The adverse atmospheric conditions, marked by rising temperatures, low humidity in vegetation, and the effects of the El Niño phenomenon in the midst of the less rainy season, have accelerated the occurrence and spread of these conflagrations.

Meanwhile, in Santa Fe de Antioquia, firefighters, with support from military aviation, have managed to contain 90% of a wildfire. In Bello, specifically on Cerro Quitasol, emergency crews report a 75% containment rate for another fire. Additional fire units have been mobilized to address the emergency in Abriaquí.

The Aburrá Valley is also experiencing critical fire points. In Medellín, the local fire department is battling a blaze on the upper part of Comuna 8, near Cerro Pan de Azúcar, with no immediate threat to homes reported. In the San Cristóbal corregimiento, teams are working tirelessly on Alto de Boquerón, combining drone monitoring with ground brigades to contain the fire while prioritizing the safety of rescue personnel.

Vanessa Paredes Zúñiga, director of the Antioquia Disaster Risk Management Department (Dagran), stated that Antioquia has recorded 71 forest fires and 50 windstorms so far in 2026. The regional government has reiterated its appeal to the public to refrain from burning activities, avoid discarding cigarette butts or flammable objects in wooded areas, and to secure their roofs against strong winds.
