Over 33,000 Apply to Volunteer for Lima 2027 Pan American Games

Lima's bid to host the 2027 Pan American and Parapan American Games has generated significant public enthusiasm, with over 33,000 individuals applying to volunteer since the program launched on August 6. The organizing committee announced this surge in interest, highlighting the strong desire among Peruvians and others to actively participate in one of the continent's major sporting events.

The volunteer recruitment drive, which will remain open until December, is a crucial step in assembling a team of 11,000 to 12,000 individuals. These volunteers will provide essential support and guidance to athletes, delegations, officials, media, and spectators throughout the competition. The selection and training process will span from January to May 2027, with roles assigned in June of that year.

The Games themselves are set to commence on July 23, 2027, and conclude on August 8 for the Pan American portion, followed by the Parapan American Games from August 20 to 29. Lima is preparing to welcome over 7,000 athletes from 41 nations across the Americas, competing in 38 sports and 59 disciplines. The Parapanamericanos will host para-athletes from 34 countries in 17 sports and 18 disciplines.

During a ceremony marking the one-year countdown on August 6, Peruvian President Dina Boluarte expressed pride and responsibility in hosting the event, emphasizing Peru's capacity for excellent organization. Panam Sports President Neven Ilic recalled the success of the 2019 Lima Games, expressing gratitude for the warm reception. Julio César Ávila, president of the Americas Paralympic Committee, thanked Peru for including the parapanamerican athletes, anticipating a transformative societal impact.
