Over 80,000 fans demand World Cup final replay amid referee controversy

A Change.org petition, initiated by fan Gisela Sánchez, has garnered over 82,000 signatures. It calls on FIFA to nullify the result and order a replay, alleging that Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic delivered a biased and corrupt performance. The petition explicitly states, "The recent final between Argentina and Spain was tarnished by the controversial and corrupt performance of the referee who, according to video evidence, was bought to influence the match's outcome."

However, such fan-driven petitions lack legal or sporting authority over official FIFA decisions. FIFA regulations permit match replays only under rare administrative circumstances, such as proven technical errors by officials, a scenario exemplified by a 2006 World Cup qualifier. Past fan petitions, including one with over 200,000 signatures after the 2022 final, have not led to regulatory changes.

The final itself was marked by physical play and tension. Argentina struggled offensively, failing to register a shot on target during regulation time. Referee Vincic called 46 fouls, penalizing Argentina 25 times. The match saw Argentina reduced to 10 players in the 93rd minute after midfielder Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card.
