Owner Dies, Leaving 13 Dogs; Animal Protection Steps In

In New Taipei City's Pinglin District, a solitary owner's passing left 13 dogs in need of immediate care. Animal protection officers responded swiftly, rescuing the animals and bringing them to the Xindian Animal House for health checks and subsequent placement with private shelters.

Each time we receive these cases, our hearts are heavy. On-site, we must assess the dogs' physical condition, and we often see them loyally guarding their owner, looking around helplessly. Facing their owner's sudden death and environmental changes, they experience stress from losing their support.

One dog, in particular, remained steadfastly by its deceased owner's side, refusing to leave. The discovery was made after neighbors reported the owner's prolonged absence. Upon entering the residence, officers found the owner had passed away days prior, with no signs of the dogs having disturbed the body. The loyal canine's vigil underscored the deep bond between pets and their owners.

Animal protection officials noted that such cases, involving pets left behind by deceased single owners, are not uncommon, with about five such incidents occurring annually. They urged pet owners, particularly the elderly and those living alone, to proactively arrange for their pets' future care. This includes designating a caregiver, providing detailed information on the pet's needs and medical history, and potentially formalizing these arrangements through a will or other legal mechanisms.

The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the responsibilities that come with pet ownership, especially for vulnerable populations. The animal protection department aims to prevent pets from becoming displaced and stressed due to unforeseen life events, ensuring they continue to receive care and companionship.
