Kaohsiung Pledges Support for Kumamoto, Recalling Past Aid

Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai highlighted the mutual support between Kaohsiung and Kumamoto, Japan, recalling the Japanese prefecture's assistance following the 2014 Kaohsiung gas explosions. He invoked the saying "true friendship in times of adversity" to underscore the strong bond between the two cities.

Chen stated that just as Kumamoto offered aid during Kaohsiung's crisis, Kaohsiung stands ready to reciprocate following the recent earthquake that struck Kumamoto. He announced that Kaohsiung is launching a donation drive to support Kumamoto's recovery and reconstruction efforts, emphasizing that friends must stand together during difficult times.

The mayor made these remarks while attending the opening of the "Support Kumamoto" booth at the Taiwan-Japan Port Fruit Festival. He encouraged the public to visit the booth, leave messages of support, and contribute to helping Kumamoto in its ongoing recovery. Kaohsiung has established a special account to facilitate donations from various sectors.

Chen also promoted the festival itself, inviting attendees to enjoy Taiwanese and Japanese fruits, food, music, and city features. He urged people to visit the "Support Kumamoto" stall to send Kaohsiung's warmth to the affected region, reinforcing the message of solidarity and shared resilience.
