Oyo abduction: PDP commends rescue, calls for measures to prevent recurrence

Nigeria's opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed relief following the safe return of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire, Oyo State, after 56 days in captivity.

Although details of the rescue remain limited, we commend the Federal Government, Oyo State government, security agencies and all individuals and organisations whose efforts contributed to the safe return of the victims.

The PDP called on the Federal Government to implement stronger measures to prevent similar incidents, emphasizing that the protection of citizens is the government's primary responsibility. The party stated that no child or educator should endure such trauma while pursuing education.

"Although details of the rescue remain limited, we commend the Federal Government, Oyo State government, security agencies and all individuals and organisations whose efforts contributed to the safe return of the victims," the PDP said in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong.

No one should be subjected to such trauma in the pursuit of education.

The Presidency had previously announced the successful rescue of all abducted individuals through a coordinated operation. During the operation, eight suspected kidnappers were arrested, while others were neutralized. The PDP described the ordeal as traumatic and stressed that preventing such security breaches is an "irreducible minimum" for the country and its citizens.

We call on the Federal Government to take decisive steps to prevent a recurrence of such heinous acts. The protection of lives and property remains the first responsibility of government and is the irreducible minimum that our country and its citizens deserve.
