PAHO concludes technical mission supporting Venezuela's earthquake health response

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has officially ended its technical mission in Venezuela, which was established to aid the health sector's response to earthquakes that struck on June 24. The operation saw international specialists deployed, essential medical supplies delivered, and healthcare services bolstered in the regions most impacted by the disaster.

The conclusion of this phase was marked by a meeting between Venezuela's Health Minister, Carlos Alvarado, and PAHO's representative in Venezuela, Armando De Negri Filho. They formally acknowledged the completion of duties by Dr. Liz Parra, an advisor for PAHO's Health Emergencies Program and the coordinator of the technical assistance provided during the emergency.

During their discussion, both officials reviewed the collaborative efforts undertaken in the weeks following the earthquakes. They emphasized the effective coordination between PAHO and the Ministry of Health in addressing the urgent needs of the affected population and recognized Dr. Parra's significant contributions. The mission's activities included mobilizing experts in emergency management, epidemiology, hospital care, logistics, and public health. PAHO also dispatched 27 tons of medicines, trauma kits, medical equipment, and hospital supplies to enhance the Venezuelan health system's response capabilities.

PAHO provided assistance for epidemiological surveillance, control of communicable diseases, and the maintenance of essential health services in the affected regions. Although Dr. Parra's mission marks the end of direct technical support, PAHO affirmed its ongoing commitment to cooperate with Venezuelan authorities. This continued support aims to aid in the recovery of the health system and address persistent needs within the communities affected by the seismic event.
