Pakistan Army chief of general staff promoted, appointed Commander National Strategic Command

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the promotion of Lieutenant General Aamer Raza, the current Chief of General Staff of the Pakistan Army, to the rank of four-star general. Concurrently, Raza has been appointed as the Commander of the National Strategic Command (CNSC), a newly established high-level military position.

The Prime Minister's Office confirmed the appointments on Friday, with Sharif extending congratulations to the newly promoted general. The creation of the CNSC is a significant development, established under the 27th Constitutional Amendment. This amendment brought substantial changes to the military's command structure, notably assigning the crucial nuclear manager role to the CNSC.

Previously, the responsibility for managing the nation's nuclear arsenal was held by the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC). The establishment of the CNSC centralizes this critical function, enhancing oversight and control over Pakistan's strategic assets.

The appointment, reappointment, and extension of the CNSC are exclusively tied to the recommendation of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), another position created by the same constitutional amendment. Importantly, the CNSC role is shielded from judicial review through a broad exclusion clause, ensuring operational autonomy within its designated sphere.
