Pakistan minister's call for new provinces faces pushback

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi's recent proposal to restructure Pakistan's governance by creating new provinces has met with significant pushback from key coalition partners. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, while personally agreeing with Naqvi's assessment of the system's "dire state," urged the interior minister to focus on implementing the National Action Plan through his own ministry first.

Asif criticized Naqvi's approach, suggesting that major governance overhauls should be initiated within constitutional forums like parliament or the federal cabinet, rather than through public addresses to select groups. He pointed out that Naqvi, as a cabinet member, rarely attended such sessions. Asif also noted that Naqvi had held a powerful position for three years and could have addressed systemic changes earlier.

Naqvi had argued that Pakistan's governance system had "collapsed" and that new administrative units were necessary for better service delivery, accountability, and access to justice. He also called for new leadership to address the youth's desire for justice, merit, and jobs. These remarks followed a statement from the military's spokesperson, who also called for an administrative reset to improve governance and adapt to modern demands.
