Pakistan orders increase in strategic oil reserves, approves refining policy changes

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to bolster Pakistan's strategic petroleum reserves, a move that comes as the cabinet committee greenlit amendments to the Pakistan Oil Refining Policy 2023. The directives were issued during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy, which received a comprehensive briefing on the progress of oil refinery upgrades, energy sector reforms, and policy implementation.

"The upgradation of oil refineries is an important need of the time and is a key pillar of Pakistan’s comprehensive energy security system," the Prime Minister’s Office quoted Sharif as saying. He emphasized that modernizing refineries would not only better satisfy the country's energy demands but also significantly decrease dependence on imported fuel. Furthermore, the upgrades are expected to facilitate the provision of more environmentally friendly fuel options.
