Pakistan's leadership stresses unity, reforms on Independence Day

Pakistan marked its 79th Independence Day with calls for national unity and essential reforms from its top civilian and military leaders. The celebrations, which began with gun salutes in Islamabad and Karachi, also featured a change of guards ceremony at the mausoleum of Pakistan's founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

But independence is not only a historic achievement. It is also a responsibility that each generation must carry forward. The Pakistan that was created through the democratic will of its people must continue to grow stronger, more secure and more prosperous. Our task is not only to remember what earlier generations achieved, but to add to it through our own work.

President Asif Ali Zardari, in his Independence Day message, paid homage to the nation's founders and those who sacrificed for its creation. He emphasized that independence is an ongoing responsibility, requiring each generation to contribute to Pakistan's strength, security, and prosperity. Zardari reflected on the past year, noting the nation's resilience and its capacity to defend its sovereignty and interests, as demonstrated during a recent conflict with India. He stressed that Pakistan's strength is tied to its responsibility to prevent conflict and protect peace.

The events surrounding Marka-i-Haq demonstrated that Pakistan seeks peace, but also possesses the resolve and capacity to defend its sovereignty and national interests. The lesson of strength is ultimately a lesson of responsibility. A country that can defend itself must also use its strength to prevent conflict, protect peace and serve the interests of its people.

The president also acknowledged the significant cost of security and stability, honoring the martyrs of the armed forces, law enforcement, and police for safeguarding the nation against external threats and terrorism. He highlighted Pakistan's role in facilitating regional dialogue and de-escalation, stating that all disputes should be resolved through diplomacy. "Our security is linked to the peace and stability of our neighbourhood and the world at large," Zardari said, reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to reducing tensions and fostering cooperation.

Their courage and commitment have helped safeguard our nation against external aggression and the threat of terrorism. The people of Pakistan remain deeply grateful for their service.

Looking ahead, Zardari urged a focus on future development, including economic strengthening, creating opportunities for youth, improving education and skills, and implementing governance, economic, and social reforms. These measures, he stated, are crucial to ensure that the benefits of development and democracy reach all segments of society.
