Pakistan warns of new river floods as monsoon rains intensify

Pakistan is bracing for further river flooding in its eastern regions following days of intense monsoon rains. Authorities have alerted that the Chenab and Ravi rivers could reach moderate to high flood levels within 24 hours. Several canals and drains have already overflowed, inundating approximately 400 square kilometers in the Lahore and Gujranwala divisions of Punjab province. The flooding has resulted in damage to crops, livestock, and infrastructure, prompting district administrations to expedite response measures, including setting up aid camps in vulnerable areas.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also cautioned about an increased flood risk across various parts of the country. Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and parts of northern Balochistan are particularly vulnerable to river and stream overflows. Pakistan experiences monsoon seasons annually, often marked by floods, landslides, and flash floods, especially in areas near rivers and drainage systems.

Since late June, monsoon rains have claimed at least 81 lives across Pakistan, according to the latest figures from the NDMA cited by local media. The ongoing situation highlights the recurring vulnerability of the country to extreme weather events during the monsoon season.
