The Indonesian government has pledged a swift and coordinated response to the aftermath of a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Flores Island on Saturday, August 15, 2026. The Presidential Palace assured that all relevant agencies are mobilized to handle the disaster's impact.

Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi confirmed coordination with key bodies, including the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), and the NTT Provincial Government. This integrated approach aims to ensure a measured and targeted emergency response while minimizing secondary risks to local communities.

The earthquake, which occurred at 5:58 a.m. Central Indonesian Time, had its epicenter at sea, approximately 38 kilometers northeast of Mbay in Nagekeo Regency. The tremor was felt intensely across East Nusa Tenggara and parts of South Sulawesi. Preliminary reports indicate that the quake caused significant impact in the El Say Port area of Sikka Regency.
