Palembang Distributes 16,500 Masks Amid Haze from Land Fires

The city of Palembang is distributing 16,500 free masks to protect residents from the effects of haze caused by land and forest fires. This measure comes as the Air Pollution Standard Index (ISPU) in Palembang reached 195 on Monday, August 24, 2026, classifying the air quality as unhealthy.

The distribution targets people active outdoors and vulnerable groups. Mask distribution points were set up at busy intersections, including RS Charitas, DPRD Sumsel, and Polda Sumsel, with thousands of masks allocated to each location. The initiative also extends to all 18 sub-districts within the city.

Compounding the air quality concerns, the Palembang City Health Office reported 9,313 cases of acute respiratory infections (ISPA) between August 1 and August 21, 2026. Authorities are urging residents, especially those who spend time outdoors, to wear masks and limit their activities outside their homes. Health facilities have also been asked to increase their preparedness for the impacts of the haze.
