Palestinians allegedly smuggle ATVs into Gaza as IDF says it will examine border security

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have initiated an investigation into the alleged smuggling of new all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) into the Gaza Strip. Palestinians were seen publicly displaying and performing stunts with the ATVs in Deir al-Balah, prompting the IDF to examine how the vehicles entered the territory under their watch.

IDF officials stated that no authorization was granted for the ATVs to be transferred into Gaza. Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicles did not pass through the Kerem Shalom Crossing, the primary official entry point. Instead, they are suspected of entering through gates along the border fence that are supervised by the IDF and Military Police.

This incident comes amid ongoing criticism regarding the conduct of the Military Police in the Gaza Division, particularly concerning checks at various gates along the border fence. Sources suggest that civilian contractors and military personnel entering and leaving Gaza are not subjected to sufficiently thorough checks. There are also concerns about a lack of enforcement against reckless driving in the area.

A security source commented on the situation, stating, "The Gaza Division needs to increase enforcement together with the Military Police." The source added that soldiers are sometimes observed in air-conditioned vehicles rather than actively checking vehicles entering and leaving Gaza, with their stated purpose often being to prevent looting on the Palestinian side. The IDF's investigation aims to determine the exact method of entry and address potential security lapses.
