Panama Authorities Study Crocodile Sightings Near Communities

Environmental authorities in Panama are closely monitoring increased crocodile sightings near communities, prompting a joint study with the Technological University of Panama. The initiative aims to pinpoint key areas where these reptiles are present and assess potential conflicts with humans.

The study is crucial for developing a management plan that promotes coexistence with a protected species vital to ecosystem balance. Panama is home to two native crocodilian species: the American crocodile, or 'cocodrilo aguja,' which can exceed four meters, and the smaller spectacled caiman, or 'babillo,' typically found in freshwater.

The objective is to have information that allows us to implement a management plan for interactions between crocodiles and humans, as well as apply a protocol to evaluate the risk level of each sighting.

While an official crocodile census is lacking, the research will provide data to implement a protocol for evaluating the risk level of each sighting. One focus area is the port of Coquira in Chepo, where fishermen and residents have noted a rise in crocodile activity. A recent viral video of a large American crocodile in the area underscored the proximity of these animals to human activities.

Authorities are concerned about people feeding crocodiles, which can diminish their natural fear of humans. They urge the public to maintain a safe distance, avoid approaching, feeding, or pursuing the animals, and refrain from entering water bodies near them. Signs with safety recommendations are being installed in sensitive areas to alert residents and visitors.
