Panama government to release $200 million in 13th Month Salary payments

Panama's government is set to release the second installment of the "Décimo Tercer Mes," or 13th Month Salary, on Thursday, August 6. This disbursement will inject more than $200 million into the national economy, typically fueling increased consumer spending on various goods and services.

As businesses prepare for the influx of cash with special offers and promotions, the Authority for Consumer Protection and Competition Defense (Acodeco) has urged Panamanians to manage this extra income responsibly. While the payment can strengthen family finances, Acodeco warns that impulsive spending could lead to significant debt. The agency recommends creating a budget and prioritizing essential household needs over non-essential purchases.

Historically, this period sees high demand for food, appliances, electronics, clothing, and home furnishings. Many also use the funds for down payments on vehicles, to pay off credit cards, loans, and utility bills, or for travel and recreation. However, Acodeco also highlighted common consumer complaints during this time, including issues with product warranties, misleading advertising, discrepancies in pricing, and problems with financing agreements.

To ensure safe and informed purchasing, Acodeco advises consumers to compare prices, quality, and warranties, verify advertised prices at the checkout, and retain receipts. For purchases involving financing or delayed delivery, consumers should carefully review contracts and confirm delivery dates to avoid disputes.
