Panama health ministry analyzes 'Squishy' toys amid benzene contamination alert

Panama's Ministry of Health (Minsa) has initiated verifications and sample collection of soft, squeezable toys known as "Squishy" or "Squeezy Dumplings." This action follows an international alert regarding the potential presence of benzene, a harmful chemical, detected in some of these popular children's products.

Authorities in Panama have not yet confirmed whether toys sold within the country contain benzene. Minsa clarified that the alert does not apply to all types of these toys, nor to every brand or model. Juan José Lezcano, deputy director general of Environmental Health, explained that samples will be examined with the support of a laboratory at the University of Panama. "The Subdirectorate is coordinating with the University of Panama's laboratory to verify which toys contain chemical substances; in this case, benzene," Lezcano stated.

If laboratory results identify products with hazardous substances, Minsa will collaborate with the Ministry of Commerce and Industries (MICI) and the National Customs Authority to implement necessary measures, which could include removing the products from the market. Yelkys Gill, director general of Public Health, noted that checks are being conducted in establishments likely to sell these toys. She advised parents to supervise children, prevent them from putting the toys in their mouths, and to remove any damaged toys immediately, washing hands afterward.

Benzene exposure can cause symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headaches, drowsiness, and irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat. In cases of significant exposure, it can lead to respiratory problems, seizures, loss of consciousness, or heart rhythm irregularities. While awaiting analysis results, Minsa recommends that consumers inspect toys for damage, leaks, or unusual odors, keep them away from children's mouths, and avoid heating them. The international alert originated from the withdrawal of a specific product, "Squeezy Dumplings," in the United Kingdom due to excessive benzene concentration.
