Panama honors fishermen and aquaculturists for food security contributions

Panama's Authority of Aquatic Resources (ARAP) honored fishermen and aquaculturists across the country for their vital role in ensuring food security and bolstering coastal economies. The ceremony recognized ten individuals, one from each province and the Ngäbe Buglé region, acknowledging their contributions.

The candidates were evaluated taking into account aspects such as innovation, leadership and associativity, as part of the established criteria for selecting the honorees.

Candidates were nominated by fishing associations and cooperatives. ARAP's General Administrator, Eduardo Carrasquilla, stated that honorees were evaluated on criteria including innovation, leadership, and collaboration. The authority emphasized that fishing activities are crucial nationwide, providing livelihoods for thousands of families and contributing significantly to the national food supply.

A job that faces multiple challenges.

Fishermen themselves acknowledged the increasing difficulties of their work, citing challenging weather conditions and the rising costs of essential supplies. Despite these hurdles, they expressed a strong commitment to continuing their profession. Jesús Morales, president of the Federation of Fishermen, stressed the importance of highlighting the efforts of those who endure long hours at sea in adverse conditions to support their families and feed the nation.

The awards also served as a call to action, urging greater support for the fishing and aquaculture sectors. The aim is to improve working conditions for those in the industry and formally recognize their essential role in Panama's economy and food security.
