Panama Lottery Loses $200 Million Annually to Illegal Gambling Operations

Panama's National Benefit Lottery (LNB) estimates it loses approximately $200 million annually due to the widespread sale of clandestine lottery tickets and other illegal gambling activities. To combat this issue, the LNB is actively conducting operations across various provinces, including Veraguas. These operations involve inspecting mini-markets, small grocery stores, and other businesses that have been reported for illegal sales. The LNB is also inspecting lottery ticket vendors to ensure compliance with regulations. Isidro Carbonell, the LNB's director general, stated during a tour in Veraguas that these activities are a normal part of the institution's mission. He confirmed that many reported businesses are indeed engaged in illegal sales, contributing to the lottery's financial losses. The inspections are part of a nationwide fiscalization plan aimed at curbing the illicit market. The LNB is particularly scrutinizing businesses owned by individuals of Asian descent, who have been frequently cited in community denunciations. The goal is to verify these claims and take appropriate action against those operating outside the law, thereby protecting the institution's revenue and the integrity of regulated gambling in Panama.
