Panama Offers Economic Zones to Indonesian Firms for Latin American Expansion

Panama is actively seeking to position itself as a key gateway for Indonesian businesses aiming to penetrate the Latin American and Caribbean markets. Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos Hoyos presented this offer during a meeting with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), emphasizing Panama's economic zones and logistical capabilities.

Hoyos highlighted Panama's role as a "great connector of the Americas," providing an efficient entry point to a market of over 450 million consumers. Specific zones promoted included the Colón Free Zone, Panama Pacífico, and Ciudad del Saber, which offer attractive fiscal, migratory, and labor incentives for regional operations. The vice chancellor described Panama as an ideal ecosystem for Indonesian companies to use for transit, repacking, assembly, and business incubation.

Beyond logistics, discussions also identified opportunities for bilateral trade in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, coffee, and agricultural products. The delegations explored how existing trade agreements and regional integration mechanisms, including Mercosur, could facilitate the entry of Indonesian goods into the region. Panama also emphasized its strong maritime ties, noting its large merchant fleet and Indonesia's significant number of mariners holding Panamanian licenses.

While the mission aimed to attract investment and boost bilateral trade, the official statement did not provide details on specific companies expressing interest, investment amounts, or agreements signed during the meeting.
