Panama Metro Line 3 Begins Installing Burunga Overpass; Traffic Changes Expected

Panama Metro Line 3 is set to begin installing the first section of the pedestrian overpass for the future Burunga station in Arraiján this weekend. The operation, scheduled from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon, will necessitate temporary modifications to traffic flow on the Pan-American Highway.

Isaac Trejos, Traffic and Roadway Manager for Line 3, stated that the work will affect only the lanes heading towards Panama center. Traffic will be diverted to the lanes heading towards La Chorrera, with one lane designated for each direction to maintain circulation. "This structure will allow passengers to safely and accessibly reach the platform and board the trains," Trejos explained, noting the overpass ensures safe access from vehicles to the station platform and mobility for people with disabilities.

This installation is part of the project's progress schedule. Similar overpasses have already been installed in San Bernardino and Nuevo Arraiján, with four more structures planned after Burunga. The elevated section of Line 3 has reached 86% completion, while the Burunga station itself is 74% complete.

Authorities have assured that access will be maintained for residents living within the work area through a coordinated operation involving Line 3 personnel, the National Police, and the Transit and Land Transport Authority (ATTT). Traffic agents will be present throughout the operation to direct traffic and guide drivers on the detours. Trejos urged drivers to respect temporary signage, follow instructions, and plan their trips in advance to minimize disruptions. The construction of Panama Metro Line 3 is projected to conclude by the end of 2028.
