Trump Announces $22 Billion Renovation for Washington's Dulles Airport

President Donald Trump has unveiled ambitious plans to renovate Washington's Dulles International Airport, projecting an investment exceeding $22 billion. The announcement, made from the Oval Office, included maps and sketches of proposed future terminals and a substantial parking structure.

Trump characterized the existing airport, which opened in 1962 and is known for its distinctive white concrete and glass design, as "one of the worst airports in the world." He expressed a strong desire to transform it into "perhaps the best."

The project aims to modernize the facility, which is currently known for its somewhat dated passenger transport system using large shuttles. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy indicated the total cost would be $22.5 billion, with United Airlines, a major carrier at Dulles, expected to contribute to the expenses.

Dulles International Airport, located approximately 40 kilometers from Washington D.C., served over 29 million passengers in 2025, marking its busiest year on record. This airport renovation is one of several large-scale projects Trump has initiated in the capital, including work on the Kennedy Center and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
