Panama Ministry of Security Creates Joint Command to Protect Specific Canal Areas

Panama's Ministry of Public Security has launched a new joint command designed to bolster the protection of seven critical areas within the Panama Canal zone. This strategic initiative brings together key security forces, including the National Police, the National Aeronaval Service (SENAN), the National Border Service (SENAFRONT), and the SUME 911 emergency medical service, under a unified command structure.

The establishment of this command, formalized by Resolution No. 100 on July 23, 2026, and published on August 5, aims to create a more coordinated and effective response mechanism. Although the resolution does not cite a specific or immediate threat against the interoceanic waterway, it emphasizes the need for preparedness against a range of potential risks. These include climate-related events, environmental hazards, cyber threats, social unrest, and transnational security challenges that could impact the canal's operations.
