Panama pension system deadline sparks queues, confusion at Social Security Fund

Long queues and confusion marked the Social Security Fund (CSS) agency in Los Pueblos, Panama City, as citizens rushed to understand their pension system choices. As the August 18 deadline loomed, insured individuals lined up from early morning seeking guidance on whether to transfer to the new "Sistema Único de Capitalización con Garantía Solidaria" or remain in their current system.

Doubt permeated the crowd, with many expressing deep insecurity about the projections presented on the "Mi Retiro Seguro" platform. "The insecurity, the insecurity about the system and the calculation of retirement, one doesn't really know what is happening," said one insured person, who found online consultations unhelpful. "There are many things that are not clear. One gets into this matter on the phone and it's for nothing."

A teacher shared her bewilderment after receiving conflicting information. Initially told she belonged to the old system, an email later advised her to switch. The platform projected a lump sum of over $26,000 in her current system, but switching could yield a monthly pension of just $194.81. "I don't understand it, I really don't understand it. I want them to guide me regarding this," she stated.

The August 18 deadline is for those eligible under Law 462 to request a pension system transfer. The CSS has stressed that the decision requires careful review of contribution history and individual projections on "Mi Retiro Seguro." Those who qualify and do not request a transfer will remain in their current affiliation, as the platform does not automatically switch regimes. The CSS reiterates that the choice is entirely personal.
