Panama's Environment Ministry intervenes 26 facilities after years of neglect

Panama's Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente) has launched a significant infrastructure overhaul, initiating recovery and rehabilitation work on 26 of its 84 facilities nationwide that had suffered years of deterioration. This initiative targets regional directorates, agencies, and protected areas, aiming to enhance public service delivery, improve operational conditions for staff, and ensure the safety of all users.

The comprehensive plan involves construction, repair, and maintenance across various aspects of the infrastructure. Specific improvements include fixing roofs, ceilings, electrical systems, and plumbing, as well as replacing doors, locks, and windows. Both internal and external painting, wall sealing, and upgrades to accessibility and climate control systems are also part of the extensive renovation efforts.

Notable interventions include work at the Punta Patiño Nature Reserve in Darién, a Ramsar-recognized wetland of international importance. Approximately B/.9,902.96 was invested there for infrastructure repairs, including sanitary parts, electrical and pumping systems, and the reconstruction of reinforced columns. The Regional Directorate of Darién also received upgrades costing $2,735.22, focusing on roof repairs, water collector construction, painting, and electrical work.

Further investments were made in Herrera province, with $9,249.01 allocated to the Ocú agency for pest control, ramp construction for disabled access, and air conditioning installation. The Las Minas agency received $8,499.37 for roof reconstruction and window replacements. Veraguas province saw one of the largest investments, with $57,042.73 dedicated to renovating the Regional Directorate in Santiago, including pressure washing, sealing, painting, roof repairs, and bathroom system upgrades. Similar repairs were carried out in numerous other agencies and sub-agencies across the country.
