Panama tourism grows 15.3% in early 2026

Panama's tourism sector is experiencing a significant boom, with visitor spending reaching approximately $3.2 billion in the first five months of 2026. This represents a robust 15.3% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, according to data from the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The positive trend is further underscored by a substantial rise in visitor arrivals. Panama welcomed around 1.3 million tourists between January and May 2026, marking a 19.2% year-on-year growth. This influx of travelers has had a ripple effect, boosting related industries such as hospitality, gastronomy, transportation, retail, and recreational services.

Economic analysts highlight that this performance reflects a growing demand for Panama's tourism services and reinforces its position as a key destination within Latin America. The country is successfully attracting not only leisure travelers but also participants in international congresses, conventions, and trade fairs.

To sustain and enhance this growth, the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP) is rolling out new initiatives. The "Seguro al Turista" (Tourist Safety) program offers temporary coverage for accidents during visitors' stays. Additionally, an interactive space called "Sal a Panamá" has been launched at Tocumen International Airport to encourage transit passengers to extend their stay and explore the country's attractions. Efforts to improve connectivity include a new direct flight route established in July 2026 between Quito, Ecuador, and Río Hato, Panama, aimed at increasing access to destinations outside the capital and diversifying tourist markets.
