Panama U-20 ready to face Mexico for World Cup ticket

Panama's U-20 national soccer team has completed its final training session ahead of a crucial match against Mexico in the 2026 CONCACAF U-20 Championship quarterfinals. This game is a direct ticket to the FIFA U-20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan in 2027.

Under coach Mike Stump, the Panamanian squad focused on tactical aspects during a light training session at the Estadio Universitario BUAP's practice field in Puebla. The team is set to face Mexico on Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. Panama time (8:00 p.m. central Mexico time) at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc. The stakes are high, as the winner not only advances to the tournament semifinals but also secures a coveted World Cup spot.

Panama aims to make its eighth appearance in a FIFA U-20 World Cup. They reached the quarterfinals as one of the best third-place teams, clinching their spot with a decisive 4-0 victory over Honduras. Goals from Josue Wood, Moisés Richards, Gerson Gordón, and Carlos Rodríguez secured the win, concluding the group stage with four points from a draw against Jamaica, a loss to Canada, and the win over Honduras.

In contrast, Mexico enters the quarterfinals undefeated as the leader of Group B, having won all three of their group stage matches with a goal difference of +9 and without conceding any goals. This performance positioned them as the second-best team in the initial round, trailing only the United States. The match between Panama and Mexico is one of four quarterfinal fixtures taking place between August 4 and 5 in Puebla.
