Panama faces Cuba in baseball's Central American Games Super Round

Panama's national baseball team kicks off its pursuit of a gold medal today in the Super Round of the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo. The team, managed by Alberto Macré, faces a formidable opponent in Cuba at the Juan Marichal stadium.

Panama enters this crucial stage with a perfect record, having swept their preliminary group 3-0 with victories over Mexico, Nicaragua, and Colombia. Their last group game saw a 3-0 shutout against Colombia, highlighted by Edgar Muñoz's timely triple, consecutive doubles from Jhonny Santos and Luis Castillo, and a solo home run by Carlos Mosquera. Pitcher Kevin Miranda delivered a stellar performance, holding Colombian batters at bay for over six innings.

Cuba, also undefeated and considered a tournament favorite, presents a significant challenge. They advanced with a 3-0 record, including a hard-fought extra-inning victory over the host nation, Dominican Republic. Their offense exploded for five runs in the eighth inning to secure that win, with key contributions from Yoelkis Gibert, Luis Vicente Mateo, Yoel Yanqui, and a three-run homer by Yasiel González.

Panama's projected lineup for the opener features Edgard Muñoz at second base, Jhonny Santos in left field, Luis Castillo as designated hitter, Erasmo Caballero behind the plate, Carlos Mosquera in right field, Abraham Rodríguez at first base, Joshwan Wright at third, José Mordock in center field, and Héctor Rayo at shortstop.
