Panama withdraws bid for 2029 Junior Pan American Games due to proximity to elections

Panama has officially withdrawn its candidacy to host the 2029 Junior Pan American Games. The nation's executive branch cited the proximity of the 2029 national elections as a primary reason for the withdrawal, stating that the electoral process could compromise the event's planning and development.

A statement from the Panamanian Olympic Committee (COP) indicated that the "proximity of the national electoral process of 2029 would introduce uncertainty factors that could affect the planning, execution, and development of the event." The decision followed a "responsible analysis of the conditions to guarantee the success of a competition of such magnitude."

Panama had viewed hosting the Junior Pan American Games as a significant opportunity to boost sports development and enhance its international profile. However, the COP acknowledged and appreciated the executive branch's transparent communication of its position. The committee had invested considerable effort in preparing the bid, including submitting a formal dossier to Panam Sports detailing Panama City's capabilities.

With Panama's withdrawal, Rosario, Argentina, and Guatemala City are now the remaining contenders to host the III Junior Pan American Games in 2029. Panam Sports is expected to announce the host city during its General Assembly in Lima next August.
