Pangandaran Regent Escapes Injury as Pongpet Bridge Collapses After Opening Ceremony

Pangandaran Regent Citra Pitriyami escaped unharmed when the Pongpet suspension bridge collapsed moments after she inaugurated it on Sunday afternoon.

Pitriyami had been crossing the newly built bridge with the local military district commander and other officials in Margajaya village, West Java. Video footage showed the group moving slowly across the bridge before it suddenly gave way, causing visitors to fall onto the structure. People at the site were then evacuated.

The bridge crosses the Cijulang River and connects the villages of Margacinta, Cibanteng and Cimindi. It forms part of a tourist route in the area. The collapse was suspected to have occurred because the bridge was carrying too much weight.

Pitriyami later shared a video showing her embracing residents near the site. “Thankfully, I have been given safety, good health and the opportunity to serve the community. Thank you for your prayers and everything,” she wrote on Instagram. Pangandaran police confirmed the collapse and said there were no fatalities. All visitors were reported safe.
