Paraguay: New Hospital a 'Shell' Without Specialists, Officials Urged to Act

A newly completed, state-of-the-art hospital in Fuerte Olimpo, Paraguay, stands as a symbol of hope for the remote Chaco region, yet it risks becoming a mere "huge shell" without essential equipment and medical specialists. The G. 18 billion (approximately $2.5 million USD) facility, built over four years, was intended to alleviate severe healthcare deficiencies that have tragically led to preventable deaths.

Residents have faced dire situations, including pregnant women losing babies due to the absence of anesthesiologists for C-sections, and mothers dying during childbirth. Critically ill patients have also succumbed during long evacuation journeys to other regions because local facilities lacked specialized care. The new hospital was meant to end this cycle of suffering in the 21st century.

While the construction is finished, the critical next steps involve equipping the massive building and, crucially, attracting specialized doctors. Without these provisions, the hospital will not fulfill its purpose. Merely furnishing the building and hiring administrative staff will not solve the underlying problem of lacking specialists, potentially leading to a simple relocation of existing issues from the old infrastructure.

The Ministry of Health is called upon to find innovative ways, including financial incentives, to encourage specialists to practice in Fuerte Olimpo. The article emphasizes that the magnificent new construction represents a significant "window of hope" for the people of Alto Paraguay, but this hope hinges entirely on its functionalization with both technology and skilled personnel.
