Paraguay's Misiones province prepares flood mitigation plan amid El Niño warnings

Authorities in Paraguay's Misiones province are proactively preparing for potential flooding linked to the El Niño weather phenomenon. Governor Richard Ramírez announced an inter-institutional plan to mitigate the impact of anticipated heavy rains and river overflows from the Paraná and Tebicuary rivers.

Meteorological forecasts indicate that El Niño could bring monthly rainfall totals of up to 400 mm between September and November. In response, the provincial government is collaborating with the binational Yacyretá entity (EBY) and the National Emergency Secretariat (SEN) to implement preventative actions. The primary focus is on high-risk areas such as Ayolas, Villa Florida, and Yabebyry.

As part of the coordinated effort, meetings have been held with district committees, mayors, and national authorities. A key agreement with Luis Benítez, director of EBY's right bank, involves logistical support, including fuel and machinery rental, for canalization and cleaning operations in vulnerable neighborhoods. This aims to lessen the severity of potential inundations.

Discussions with SEN Minister Arsenio Ramón Zárate included a proposal to establish a regional SEN office. This would expedite data collection and ensure the swift delivery of essential supplies to families affected by floods. Governor Ramírez emphasized that while some situations may be unavoidable, preventative measures can significantly reduce their impact. The goal is to streamline assistance, removing bureaucratic hurdles to provide immediate support during critical times.
