Spanish PM offers solidarity to Colombia after devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez conveyed his "heartfelt solidarity" to Colombia after a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the nation, claiming over a hundred lives. The tremor caused widespread destruction, collapsing buildings and damaging infrastructure in central Colombia and the coffee-growing region.

"All our love and solidarity with the Colombian people after the terrible earthquake that has hit the country," Sánchez stated on social media platform X. He affirmed that Spain's thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by the disaster. The Spanish government's commitment was echoed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, who expressed solidarity with the "brotherly Colombian people."

Spain's diplomatic missions in Colombia, including the Embassy and Consulate General in Bogotá, are actively engaged in assisting Spanish nationals residing in or visiting the country. Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella reported that the earthquake, which occurred at 12:30 PM local time (17:30 GMT), resulted in at least 111 deaths, 87 injuries, and extensive damage. Approximately 1,575 homes were damaged, 37 were completely destroyed, and 61 buildings collapsed. Additionally, 18 health centers and 52 educational facilities sustained damage. The earthquake's impact was felt across at least five departments, highlighting the severity of the event.
