Paraguay's PY04 Highway in Severe Disrepair, Endangering Users

A crucial section of Paraguay's PY04 highway, connecting Pilar to San Juan Bautista de Ñeembucú, is in a state of severe deterioration, posing a significant risk to users. The 24-kilometer stretch, completed just four years ago at a cost of over 69.5 billion Paraguayan guaranis, now exhibits deep cracks, sinkholes, and extensive damage, resembling a "bombed-out road."

Drivers and residents who rely on this vital artery for transporting people and agricultural products have voiced serious concerns. They report that the road's condition creates a high risk of accidents, particularly during nighttime and rainy weather when the numerous potholes and damaged areas are difficult to see. Beyond safety hazards, the poor state of the pavement is causing frequent mechanical breakdowns in private vehicles, buses, and trucks.

In response to persistent complaints, Pedro Cantero, head of District 12 for the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), announced that repairs are scheduled for the upcoming week. Crews from the Itauguá asphalt plant will address the most critical sections of the PY04, as well as other problematic areas on the PY19 route and in General Díaz. However, road users are demanding a permanent solution to ensure safety and prevent further premature decay of the costly infrastructure.
