Parchim Basement Fire Forces Evacuation of Over 80 Residents; Arson Suspected

More than 80 residents were forced to evacuate their homes overnight after a fire erupted in the basement of at least two apartment buildings on Walter-Hase-Straße in Parchim. The blaze, which began around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, triggered multiple explosions described as small, rapid gas ignitions.

Emergency services, including police, fire departments, and rescue teams, responded with a large contingent. Twenty-five individuals sustained smoke inhalation and minor injuries as a result of the fire, with several requiring transport to a hospital for further treatment. The evacuated residents were temporarily housed in a nearby gymnasium.

Authorities have cordoned off the affected apartment blocks for further investigation. The criminal police have launched an investigation into the incident, suspecting particularly aggravated arson. A fire investigator is expected to examine the scene later today on behalf of the public prosecutor's office. The estimated property damage from the fire is currently around 500,000 euros, and the cause of the fire remains unclear.
