Parking at Vršič cut by two-thirds to meet nature protection requirements

Visitors to Slovenia’s Vršič Pass can again park at the summit, but the redesigned site has two-thirds fewer spaces than before reconstruction because of nature protection requirements.

The new arrangement provides 80 spaces for cars, three for disabled visitors, 24 for motorcycles, two for buses and eight spaces for cars stopping for up to 15 minutes. Parking will remain free until the end of the year.

Drivers will see occupancy information on traffic signs before the barriers on both the Kranjska Gora and Trenta sides. The information covers only the public parking at the summit and excludes spaces at private mountain huts.

A two-lane approach begins before each barrier. Drivers seeking a summit parking space must take the right lane and collect a parking ticket. Entry will be allowed only while spaces remain available. Other road users must use the left lane to continue across the pass or reach other designated parking areas and destinations along the road.

Turnarounds before both barriers will allow drivers to reverse direction if the lot is full or a queue becomes too long. Traffic stewards will be present at weekends to help visitors use the new system and manage traffic.
