Parliament: MyCC empowerment, water resources to be focus of Dewan Rakyat today

The Malaysian Parliament's Dewan Rakyat is set to deliberate on several key issues today, including the long-term planning for water resource capacity, the strengthening of the Malaysian Competition Commission (MyCC), and the implementation of age verification for social media accounts.

According to the Order of Business, Suhaizan Kaiat (PH-Pulai) will question the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation regarding the government's long-term strategy to enhance the state's water capacity. This is particularly relevant as Johor is emerging as a major data hub in Southeast Asia, increasing the demand for water resources. The question will also touch upon dam construction, water treatment plants, and the use of recycled water to meet this growing demand.

Datuk Seri Ismail Abd Muttalib (PN-Maran) will direct a question to the Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living concerning the government's measures to empower MyCC. The focus will be on MyCC's role in monitoring housing price offers and packages, as well as its effectiveness in investigating anti-competitive practices within the housing market, including potential price-fixing or market manipulation.

Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi) will seek clarification from the Minister of Communications regarding the purpose of implementing age verification for social media accounts. He also wants to understand the ministry's methods for ensuring that licensed service providers only access limited and proportionate personal data, and are mandated to delete this data once its collection purpose is fulfilled.

The Second Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament of the Dewan Rakyat is scheduled to run for 16 days, concluding on July 16.
