PAS: Political truce with Bersatu over after state election contest

The Islamist party PAS has declared an end to its political truce with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), a fellow member of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition. PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang stated that Bersatu's decision to contest against the coalition in a recent state by-election, and its leaders' public expressions of willingness to cooperate with Pakatan Harapan (PH), have effectively closed the door on their political understanding.

"Yes, basically, they (Bersatu) contested against us in the Negeri Sembilan by-election and there are statements about wanting to join with PH," Abdul Hadi explained after a religious lecture. This move has led PAS to decide against inviting Bersatu to its upcoming 72nd Muktamar (general assembly) in Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan.

Earlier on June 8, the PAS Working Committee made the decision to end its political cooperation with Bersatu after reviewing the positions and future directions of both parties. The party cited reports, studies, and current assessments as the basis for this decision.

Despite the rift with Bersatu, PAS remains committed to fostering unity among Muslims and Malays. The theme of "perpaduan ummah" (unity of the faithful) will be a central focus at the upcoming Muktamar. Abdul Hadi emphasized the importance of this theme in bringing together various political parties to face current challenges. He also noted that PAS is focused on strengthening its election machinery in anticipation of the general election, which is expected soon as the current parliamentary term nears its end.

PAS has extended invitations to UMNO and other parties within the PN coalition to attend the Muktamar. Meanwhile, Bersatu's Melaka Information Chief, Hishamuddin Abdul Karim, reportedly stated that his party is open to discussions with other parties sharing common ground, including PH, ahead of the Melaka state election. However, he stressed that any electoral cooperation must exclude parties that have betrayed trust and the spirit of cooperation previously established within PN.
