Patrus Ananias confirms he will run for Governor of MG on a pro-Lula ticket

Federal Deputy Patrus Ananias has officially announced his candidacy for Governor of Minas Gerais, a move seen as crucial for President Lula's national campaign. Ananias, a veteran PT politician with roots in Catholic groups that helped found the party, confirmed his decision in a video posted on social media.

"I have made a decision that I want to share directly with you today. This is the first formal announcement of my candidacy for governor of the state of Minas Gerais," Ananias stated. He emphasized his lifelong commitment to politics, stemming from his Christian upbringing and dedication to helping the poor. This religious and social background is a theme he highlighted as increasingly relevant in recent elections.

The alliance between Ananias and Lula was solidified after a conversation on June 16th. While Ananias requested time to consult with allies, the PT party in Minas Gerais convened a meeting to formally endorse him. His public announcement followed this internal party process.

Ananias was not Lula's first choice for the gubernatorial race. The president had initially hoped to secure Senator Rodrigo Pacheco, who showed no interest, and later favored former Contagem Mayor Marília Campos. Campos, however, is expected to run for a Senate seat instead. The PT also approached PDT candidate Alexandre Kalil, who rejected an alliance with Lula for the first round of the election, despite having been an ally in 2022.

Ananias, 74, brings extensive political experience, including a term as mayor of Belo Horizonte and service as a federal minister. He is currently in his fourth term as a federal deputy and has previously run for state governor in 1998 and vice-governor in 2010, without success. His candidacy now moves forward for formalization at the local convention and subsequent registration.
